Silkscreen onto Encaustic

What is Screenprinting onto/ into Encaustic?
Screenprinting onto/ into Encaustic is a workshop that covers the unique process of screenprinting pigment sticks, tinted gesso, and screenprinting inks below and onto encaustic surfaces. A simplified approach towards screenprinting makes this process easy to grasp and unites graphic print elements with painting surfaces and motifs. The class will focus on creating images that incorporate multiple printing passes from both fixed screenprinting stations to freeform printing approaches.

Special Notes

  • The class is designed for students who have encaustic experience

  • although no screenprinting experience is necessary.

Over the 3 days, each artist will work on 15 small paintings with the idea of learning the process of silkscreening onto encaustic. The course will feature daily feedback on your work that help you learn the silkscreening process while also learning about layering imagery through the printing process. Instruction will cover working with waterbased and R & F pigment sticks as print material. Questions such as, what are the different ways I can use encaustic gesso in my work will be addressed. Many “what if” possibilities will float to the surface as we work.

In 1995, I started exploring encaustic paint and have learned much over the 28 years of working with the medium. In 2003, I pioneered the process of silkscreen onto encaustic and in 2011 started teaching the class. I have taught the class across the U.S. and Canada. I’ll help you get from point A to B faster (both on a technical and formal dimension), while still be fascinated with the journey of exploring process.

What will you learn over the three day class includes:

  • printing silkscreened imagery onto encaustic surfaces

  • working with opaque and translucent color to develop complex imagery

  • surface manipulations both of wax and printed materials

  • using advanced fusing (stage fusing) processes to incorporate printed material

  • mixing oil and wax

  • create 15 small paintings over 3 days that will help you learn to use the silkscreen process on larger pieces

  • learn how to print freehand onto large paintings

  • learn how to process a silkscreen

  • safety and history of encaustic
