Bold Territory : Experimental Drawing with Jeffrey Hirst

23 - 29 September 2024

To Register please use this LINK

This experimental drawing workshop will utilize traditional and non-traditional materials to realize work ranging from quick studies to fully developed pieces. The class emphasis is on experimentation, expressing personal vision and taking chances without concern for likeness of the image. Exploration will include a field trip to ancient northern Mayo sites and use of the local landscape as jumping off points to inspire work. Students will work with various methods and materials such as charcoal, graphite, pigment sticks, water media, peat, monotype printing, plaster, ink and collage to develop work that echoes each participant’s aesthetic interest and vision. Printmaking processes will be included in developing work that leads to unpredictable discoveries that open new doors to thinking about aesthetic possibilities. Power point presentations will be given to illustrate examples of how drawing and mixed media are used by contemporary artists. There will be daily exercises to promote creative thinking and subconscious direction. Artists will have daily access to the current exhibition at Ballinglen Museum of Contemporary Art and full access to the studio space. The class will have access to the Ballinglen Museum permanent collection’s 800 pieces as a learning tool. The 5-day workshop is being taught by Jeffrey Hirst, an experienced teacher and resident fellow at Ballinglen Arts Foundation.
