Crystal Marie -Shaping Place: Mixed Media Sculpture and the Art of Momigami - Hirst Studio, Chicago

About this Class at Hirst Studio in Chicago

Shaping Place: Mixed Media in Sculpture and the Art of Momigami is a 4-day workshop taught by Crystal Marie: August 20 - 23, 2025.

Join artist Crystal Marie for an immersive exploration of the ancient Japanese craft of hand-kneading paper, known as Momigami. Learn Crystal’s innovative techniques for transforming these papers into three-dimensional sculptural designs, with endless opportunities for self-expression through the integration of various materials and mediums.

Topics Covered In This Class

Centered around the themes of physical identity and the concept of home as an abstract representation, this class begins with an introduction to both traditional and contemporary methods of hand-kneading paper. Through these techniques, students will create rich textures and visually compelling surfaces that echo the terrain of the body and landscape—symbolizing personal identity and the concept of home.

Students will also explore a range of mixed media options, including stitching, mark-making, paper clay, encaustic wax, and more.

Guided by Crystal, participants will translate their ideas into free-standing sculptures, objects, and wall-mounted 3D works. Most supplies will be provided by the instructor and studio host, but students are encouraged to bring personal items or materials they wish to incorporate into their designs.

About Crystal Marie

Crystal Marie considers herself to be “a material girl” when it comes to her art practice, which is rooted in collage. Evolving to include three-dimensional sculptures and assemblages, Crystal’s work speaks to both physical location and identity. Her process begins with an experimental approach, allowing what she’s brought to the table to inform her decisions as she builds layers of texture and meaning.

A Chicago based mid-career artist currently residing in Kansas City, Crystal Marie has one book published on the art of collage and is writing a second book about overcoming the blocks commonly encountered in the studio. Crystal has exhibited her work in many fine art exhibitions and solo shows, earning her gallery representation and the coveted 2018 Racine Art Museum Artist Fellowship.
