Encaustic Painting Master Class Think Tank: Explorations and Beyond covers intermediate/ advanced encaustic processes + content
This class is designed for artists who have worked with encaustic and want to fine tune and expand on what they already know. Perhaps you want to learn more about adding glazes, or maybe you want to further your understanding of collage or adding alternative materials to your work. This class is a “think tank” where we will explore practical solutions for your work from transparent passages to fully material-oriented surfaces. If you have worked with encaustic for a few years and feel you have reached a standstill, this class will open new doors for you to explore. Even if you feel your work is moving along at a nice pace, this class will accelerate your growth both as an encaustic painter and overall as an artist.
Over the 3 days, each artist will work on 3 paintings with the idea of making radical changes and alterations to the work. The course will feature daily feedback on your work that help you stretch your aesthetic ideas. We will have short group discussions that work as brain-storming sessions where you will start to think outside the norm of encaustic painting. Questions such as, what are the different ways I can use encaustic gesso in my work will be addressed. Many “what if” possibilities will float to the surface as we work.
In 1995, I started exploring encaustic paint and have learned much over the 28 years of working with the medium. I’ll help you get from point A to B faster (both on a technical and formal dimension), while still be fascinated with the journey of exploring process.
What will you learn over the three day class includes:
mixing and applying encaustic paint to achieve complex color relationships
working with opaque and translucent color
surface manipulations both of wax and substates
collage processes using materials including more than paper
mixing oil and wax
using problem-solving skills that you may use in encaustic painting and other media such as printmaking, sculpture, or any visual medium
how to create 3 paintings over 3 days that move through various transformations
safety and history of encaustic
