Encaustic Workshops

Join me for my new one day encaustic workshop designed for beginners through advanced painters. I am now offering a monthly workshop at my spacious Chicago studio with room for up to six artists.

What is covered in the class? Depending on where you currently are with your painting practice, I will help you evolve your work.

If you are a beginning we will cover basics for beginning painters that include: mixing and applying encaustic paint, fusing methods, substrate choices, surface treatments, learning how to make a stable painting, and understanding safe working practices.

If you are an intermediate or advanced painter, we will cover:

  • complex color mixing

  • working with translucent color and opaque layers

  • learning how to develop a smooth surface

  • advanced fusing techniques

  • mixing oil and wax

  • substrates both traditional and experimental

  • talking about ideas with your work

What to expect?

The one day workshop will meet in Friday, May 24 from 10 - 4 pm at Hirst Studio at the Bridgeport Art Center in Chicago. There are over 500 parking spots so you will easily find a place.

The studio is a well ventilated, air-conditioned 1300 sqft space. It is a working encaustic studio with encaustic palettes, torches, heat guns, tools, and brushes.

R & F Handmade Paints supplies the workshop with R & F encaustic paint, gesso, encaustic medium, and Pigment Sticks.

About Jeffrey Hirst

I have been a professional artist since 1988 and in 1995 I started painting with encaustic paint and have been working with the medium for 28 years. I have been teaching encaustic longer than any instructor in the Midwest and have everyone from beginners to advanced level artists. I’ll help you get from point A to B faster (both on a technical and formal dimension), while helping you still be fascinated with the journey of exploring process. I am a R & F Handmade Paint Core Instructor and represent the Chicago area.

My encaustic work has been shown across the U.S., Canada, and Ireland. I am represented by Addington Gallery in Chicago and Brandt-Roberts Galleries in Columbus, OH.
