Jeffrey Hirst -Photo Intaglio - Solarplate Printmaking

Photo Intaglio - Solarplate Printmaking

What is Photo Intaglio - Solarplate Printmaking?
Photo Intaglio - Solarplate Printmaking is a workshop that covers the process of creating and printing photopolymer plates (solar plates) and making both black and white and color prints. The class will cover making multiplate prints that utilize solarplate, monoprinting and drypoint processes. While we learning the solarplate process, we will also look at how the work functions from an aesthetic perspective .

Special Notes

  • no printmaking experience is necessary.

Over the 3 days, each artist will work on 4 small solarplates with the idea of learning the process of photo intaglio. The course will feature daily feedback on your work that help you learn the solarplate process while also learning about layering imagery through the printing process. Instruction will cover working with Akua Intaglio inks as a print material. Questions such as, what are the different ways I can use to combine two printmaking plates to realize an image. Many “what if” possibilities will float to the surface as we work.

In 1983, I started exploring printmaking as a lithographer and created many color lithographs. Early on, I became interested in combining print processes and have worked extensively in intaglio, lithography, relief, and screenprinting. In 2003, I pioneered the process of silkscreen onto encaustic. In 2011, I started teaching the Silkscreen onto Encaustic and have taught the class across the U.S. and Canada. I’ll help you get from point A to B faster (both on a technical and formal dimension), while helping you still be fascinated with the journey of exploring process.

What will you learn over the three day class includes:

  • processing and printing solarplates

  • creating both black and white and color prints

  • creating mutiplate prints using easy registration systems

  • using Akua Intaglio inks and using various inking systems

  • mixing solarplate, monoprinting, and drypoint t to realize mutiplate imagery

  • create 4 small solarplate over 3 days that will help you learn to use the photo intaglio process

  • learn how to print a solarplate as a relief print

  • learn how to make both photographic and hand drawn solar plates

  • safety etching press safety
