Join Chicago based printmaker Jeffrey Hirst for this intensive course where you will be creating imagery that incorporates a multiple of printing passes.

  • While technical information will be covered in this class, the emphasis will be on image making and each students aesthetic vision.

  • Akua ink will be used during the workshop for all its wonderful properties of color, transparency and clean up.

  • The class will include a slide presentation and videos viewing as well as individual meetings and a class review of work.

The techniques that will be covered include:

  • Drypoint and using found materials for printing.

  • Creating carborundum collagraph printing plates. A carborudum print is made using a metal grit that is glued to a printing plate. The plate is then inked and printed on an etching press. Carborundum prints produce rich tonal passages and are very tactile in surface textures.

  • Chine Colle - a process where lighter papers are collages onto heavy papers using an etching press to apply pressure.

  • Monoprinting.

Materials needed for this innovative workshop are mostly covered by the included materials fee. A short additional student supply list will be emailed to you after you sign up. Some paper will be provided and additional paper can be purchased at the studio.

Workshop limited to 8 participants.

Workshop held at Asheville Print Studio: Riverview Station - Studio #108, 191 Lyman Street, River Arts District, Asheville, NC
